M-PESA: How Kenya’s Mobile Money Service Works

Published March 2026

M-PESA mobile money service

M-PESA, which stands for "Mobile" (M) and "Money" (PESA in Swahili), is a mobile-phone-based, SMS-driven, and app-based money transfer and microfinancing service. It functions as a digital wallet linked to a user’s phone number, allowing them to deposit, withdraw, send money, and pay bills without a traditional bank account. M-PESA leverages a widespread network of agents to make financial services accessible to both urban and rural populations in Kenya and other African countries.

How M-PESA Works

1. Registration

Users register at an authorized M-PESA agent, such as retail outlets or airtime resellers. The registration links the account to the user’s mobile number and is secured with a personal PIN. The process ensures that each account is uniquely tied to the individual, maintaining security while enabling ease of use.

2. Deposit (Cash-in)

To use M-PESA, users first deposit physical cash with an agent. The agent converts the cash into electronic money (e-money), which is then available in the user’s mobile wallet. This step allows people without bank accounts to access digital financial services.

3. Transactions

4. Security and Technology

M-PESA transactions are secured with a personal PIN, and both sender and recipient receive real-time SMS notifications for every transaction. The system operates through SIM-card-resident applications or USSD codes (for example, *334# in Kenya). This technology ensures that M-PESA remains accessible even on basic mobile phones without internet connectivity.

Impact and Benefits

M-PESA has revolutionized financial inclusion in Kenya, providing a secure, convenient, and widely accessible alternative to traditional banking. It is especially valuable for unbanked populations who previously lacked access to financial services. Beyond individual transfers, M-PESA facilitates microloans, savings, and business transactions, supporting entrepreneurship and boosting economic activity across the country.
