JOB PURPOSE
Microsoft is seeking to recruit interns for the AI for Good Research Lab to support research and development in artificial intelligence solutions addressing global challenges.
The role focuses on applying advanced research in machine learning and AI, contributing to innovative projects, and collaborating with researchers to develop scalable systems that drive real-world impact.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Review existing research literature, identify gaps, and formulate relevant research questions
- Design and conduct experiments using advanced techniques in machine learning and artificial intelligence
- Develop and implement prototypes for scalable AI systems and applications
- Collaborate with researchers, interns, and external partners to move solutions from concept to production
- Research and evaluate new tools, technologies, and methodologies in the AI research ecosystem
- Contribute technical knowledge in specialized areas to support research planning and execution
- Present research findings and participate in knowledge-sharing within the research community
- Work closely with mentors and peers to support ongoing research initiatives
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Required Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in a PhD program in Computer Science or a related STEM field
- Must have at least one academic term remaining after the internship
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience in Python-based modeling
- At least 2 years’ experience working with deep learning models
- Strong proficiency in written and spoken English
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with programming languages such as C/C++, Java, MATLAB, or Python
- Familiarity with deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow
- Academic or practical experience in areas such as:
- Machine Learning
- Neural Networks
- Computer Vision
- Natural Language Processing
- Data Science
- Optimization algorithms
- Privacy and security
- Experience in applied AI areas such as:
- Geospatial machine learning
- Foundation models
- Agent-based AI systems
- Low-resource language modeling
- Experience applying AI to sectors like agriculture, biodiversity, public health, or disaster response is an added advantage
