About the Role
As a Staff Backend Engineer on the Grafana App Platform team, you will help transform Grafana into a scalable, multi-tenant observability platform that supports both open-source and commercial applications.
The team is responsible for evolving Grafana’s architecture to support cloud-scale workloads while enabling developers to build deeper integrations with dashboards, alerts, incidents, and telemetry data.
This position is ideal for engineers with extensive experience building and operating SaaS platforms, distributed systems, and cloud services at scale.
Key Responsibilities
Backend Development
- Design and implement new backend features and services.
- Improve system reliability, scalability, and operational performance.
- Analyze production environments and continuously optimize services.
- Contribute to the evolution of Grafana’s cloud architecture.
Technical Leadership
- Author and review technical design documents.
- Participate in architecture discussions and roadmap planning.
- Influence engineering standards and best practices.
- Help drive strategic technical decisions.
Mentorship and Collaboration
- Mentor engineers across the organization.
- Work closely with cross-functional teams and stakeholders.
- Coordinate technical initiatives across multiple squads.
- Promote knowledge sharing and engineering excellence.
Production Operations
- Participate in on-call rotations.
- Monitor production systems and resolve incidents.
- Improve observability and operational tooling.
- Ensure platform stability and customer satisfaction.
Required Qualifications
- Extensive experience building and operating SaaS platforms.
- Strong software engineering and backend development skills.
- Experience solving distributed systems challenges.
- Knowledge of scalability, multi-tenancy, high availability, and data isolation.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to collaborate effectively across multiple teams.
